Jerry Hill's CrossFit Challenge

Fitness is my passion, and it has been for twenty seven years.  At the age of fourteen, exercise intrigued me beyond mastering a basic level of competency.  Even at that early age it struck me that if I could become stronger and faster and develop more endurance, then I would be able to play harder.  Play being the operative word in the latter sentence.

I do find exercise synonymous with fun.

Of course, my definition of play is a bit different than others’...

...even my own meaning of it has changed over the years.  I’ve moved from the kid on the playground scaling jungle gyms to a competitive athlete and a United States Marine, to my current roles as a coach, trainer, husband, and the father of two young girls.  As I passed through each stage, fitness has always enhanced my life, and it has been the key to my continued desire to push my potential for peak performance.

Having met with great success in my fitness pursuits, I found myself asking,  "What is it about my approach to exercise that makes it so inherent to me, so centering in my daily life...

...and how can I teach others to know gratification from their fitness...to experience the rush of  peak effort and the thrill of optimal performance?”

In answer to this question I discovered CrossFit; a grassroots conditioning program that's strength lies in it's ability to deliver elite fitness and forge community rich with integrity, honor and courage

All of this has lead to the creation of the CrossFit Challenge here in Old Town Alexandria.  My passion is my vocation allowing me to share the knowledge I’ve gained though my pursuits and provide others with the tools necessary to achieve lifelong results from their fitness.

Oh...CrossFit is also a great way to play hard!

CrossFit Old Town is

"Alexandria's Hardest Workout Ever"

So What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed our workouts and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.

Crossfit Old Town offers everything I have asked for in a gym and more.
Encouragement, Strength, Technique, Coaching, Growth, Competition, Accountability.
I have been active most of my life except four years in college.  In those four years, I gained about 30 pounds.  I spent the next 8 years working off that weight.  I started working on my own in a gym, then went to a personal trainer, learned to work with Kettlebells and then I found Crossfit.  After my first class I told a friend, "I have found my home."  I have been working with Jerry for four months.  I now weigh less than I did in high school and fit into clothes I have never been able to wear before.

The weight really isn't what it's about though.  Every day I come to class excited about what is ahead.  I know it's going to hurt, but I know it'll feel great at the same time.  I can deadlift 175 pounds and strict press 75 pounds.  The great thing with all of this is that you are always surrounded by people who want you to succeed. They want to see you do one more rep.  They want to see you make a heavier lift.  They want you to meet your personal goals.  The greatest thing is that they never want to see you quit.  Crossfit is an addiction.  One that I'm proud to have!

~Adrienne Hoar

I love the formal characteristics of the class (every session is a unique and frenzied work-out): I always feel like my blood is burning through my aching body when the hour is over. But I also value the fundamental informal characteristic of Crossfit: a group of people working out together. Being a member of a community dedicated to finishing these harsh circuits together is it's own type of buzz. The communal nature of our Old Town class provides a source of strength that you cannot get from solitary exercise or simply a one-on-one trainer-to-consumer arrangement. Perhaps this fitness regimen is a very perverse form of pleasure for me, but I am convinced one of the most fulfilling forms of exhaustion anyone can feel is when you start your day at Crossfit Old Town.
